DJI FPV Wind Resistance (explained)

Being a bulky and heavy drone, how does the DJI FPV resist winds? Is it any good?

DJI FPV Wind Resistance (explained)

The DJI FPV is a fantastic FPV drone for a beginner/intermediate to start with. It’s unique in the type of cinematic content it can film, but as with any drone, flying in high winds may or may not be ideal. What is the DJI FPV wind resistance?

DJI FPV Drone’s max wind speed resistance is between 39-49 kph (25-31 mph). The wind resistance is changed depending on the mode you are flying the drone, and it may or may not hold up to those winds. DJI FPV drone may also be able to fly at higher wind speeds but at your own risk.

There is quite a lot of information to cover about the DJI FPV drone wind resistance. I would recommend you keep reading to find out the best information.

Also, you can have a quick look at this related article once you have finished reading this one:

How is the DJI FPV wind resistance compared to other (standard) drones

A normal drone may relate a lot when flying to internal sensors to help stabilize the drone in front of the wind.

Except for the normal mode, DJI FPV won’t benefit from this advantage because it will not hover, and every stick input is entirely controlling the drone (manual mode). No aid from any sensing systems.

Here is a quick list of several common drones compared to DJI FPV wind resistance

  • DJI FPV wind resistance – 10.8m/s -13.6m/s or 39-49 kph (25-31 mph)
  • DJI Avata wind resistance – 10.7m/s or 38.5 kph (23.9 mph)
  • DJI Mavic 3 wind resistance – 12m/s or 43.2kph (26.8 mph)
  • DJI Mini 3 Pro wind resistance -10.7m/s or 38.5 kph (23.9 mph)
  • DJI Inspire 2 wind resistance – 10m/s or 36 kph (22.3 mph)

According to DJI, the DJI FPV Drone wind resistance stays somewhere in the middle as compared to multiple drone products made by them; however, on the technical side is not specified if this wind resistance is applied when flying in normal mode or manual mode, as there is a major difference between.

What does affect the DJI FPV wind resistance?

There are three main factors that can influence a drone’s wind resistance, and in this case, we will talk about the DJI FPV.

  • The drone aerodynamics. This will matter a lot not only when flying the drone fast and encountering wind resistance but it is how the drone will mainly react to higher winds or wind gusts.

The aerodynamics of the DJI FPV drone is unique of its kind and presents a massive advantage in providing excellent wind resistance and reducing wind friction on the drone both when flying at higher speeds or hovering.

  • The drone weight – the DJI FPV weighs approximately 800 grams, which is quite a lot compared to other standard drones. But the drone’s weight indeed offers better wind resistance; for instance, the heavier the drone is, the better it resists higher winds or wind gusts.
  • The drone motors and internal sensing systems – have little to do with the DJI FPV drone (in manual mode), as this is the main focus of many standard drones to be able to better stabilize the drones in high winds.

However, if we relate to the DJI FPV motor strengths that is a factor to help stabilize it in high winds, we’re talking probably one of the strongest drone motors made by DJI, with the possibility to accelerate from 0 to 100kph in less than 2 seconds.

Is there any way to increase the DJI FPV wind resistance?

Technically, with the DJI FPV drone is little to nothing else to be done to increase wind resistance.

The only thing is to avoid adding accessories (such as landing gear, and GoPro on top) that may affect the drone’s aerodynamics and have a negative impact on higher winds or wind gusts.

Other drone propellers may have little to no effect in increasing the DJI FPV drone wind resistance.

What is the risk of flying the DJI FPV drone in high winds?

It’s simple. You can crash, or at least lose control of the drone.

It would be more difficult for you to stabilize it, depending on flying modes.

  • Flying the DJI FPV Drone in normal mode on high winds – the sensing system will attempt to stabilize as much as possible, and it will help to keep the drone in place on high winds or wind gusts. It would be harder to lose control of the drone, but it’s a risky approach to fly above the specified max wind resistance.
  • Flying the DJI FPV Drone in manual mode on high winds – in this case, we are at higher risk of losing control of the drone as there is no sensing system that may help stabilize the drone, and high wind in combination with wind gusts are our main enemy. – Believe me, when I say, it would be quite easy to lose control of an FPV drone in high winds when flying manual/acro

Conclusion

Always fly the DJI FPV drone in high winds or wind gusts at your own risk.

Although the technology has advanced in the past couple of years to help the drones have better wind resistance, please keep in mind that this may not be the case when flying in manual/acro mode.
